Gaeta is a seaside town in southern Lazio, in the province of Latina, facing the gulf that carries its name, halfway between Rome and Naples. It has two souls living a few hundred metres apart: the medieval old town clinging to the promontory of Sant'Erasmo, made of alleys, stairways and Norman churches, and the modern town stretching along Serapo beach and the Lungomare Caboto.
For centuries it was a military stronghold — the last capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, besieged in 1861 — and you can still read that history in the forts, walls and gun batteries scattered across the headland. Today it is a seaside destination that stays alive all year round, with around twenty thousand residents and twenty-two kilometres of coast.
The symbol of the town is the Montagna Spaccata and the Grotta del Turco, a hundred-metre cleft in the rock running down to the sea inside Monte Orlando park. In the old town you can visit the Angevin-Aragonese Castle, the cathedral of Sant'Erasmo and the Cappella d'Oro. If you only have one day, this is the itinerary we suggest.
There are seven, and each one is different. Serapo is the town beach, sandy and fully serviced, a short walk from the centre; Sant'Agostino is the longest, breezy and loved by surfers; Fontania is a small bay where you swim above the remains of a Roman villa; the Arenauta is reached by walking down three hundred steps. The complete guide compares them one by one.
High season runs from June to September, peaking between mid-July and the Ferragosto holiday on 15 August: warm sea, busy town, top prices. June and September are the best months for the sea without the crowds. Gaeta does not shut down in winter: from November to January there are the Gaeta Christmas lights (the Luminarie), and the medieval old town remains one of the loveliest in Lazio out of season too. The up-to-date calendar is on the events page.
By car, leave the A1 motorway at Cassino or Frosinone, or follow the Flacca coast road from Terracina. By train the station is Formia, on the Rome-Naples line, connected to Gaeta by the Cotral buses. The sore point is parking: the old town is a restricted traffic zone, so it is worth reading the guide to Gaeta Medievale's ZTL before you drive in. In summer there is also a free shuttle to the beaches. For food, our selection is in where to eat in Gaeta.
