Serapo Beach

The spiaggia di Serapo is Gaeta’s quintessential beach: one and a half kilometers of fine sand just steps from the center, enclosed on one side by the promontory of Monte Orlando and on the other by the coast leading towards Fontania. It is the only beach you can reach on foot from downtown, and it is also the one that fills up first.

Where it is and how to get there

Serapo is right in town, not outside: you can walk there from the center in fifteen minutes, which sets it apart from all the other beaches in Gaeta. The reference point is Via Marina di Serapo; beach access points are distributed along the shore.

For Serapo, look for parking around Via Marina di Serapo and Corso Italia and check the signs for the specific area. Where to find the free beach

It is the question we get asked most often, and the answer is that there is indeed a free beach at Serapo: the shoreline is mixed, with private beach clubs alternating with public free sections along the entire one and a half kilometers. There is no single designated free area: you will find free stretches between the beach clubs and toward the ends, where the beach gets quieter.

Those who choose the free beach must bring everything they need — umbrella, water, towels — and keep in mind that on peak days, the best spots are taken early in the morning. Those who prefer sunbeds, showers, and beach bars will find fully equipped beach clubs along the entire promenade.

La Nave di Serapo

Looking out at the sea, you will notice an isolated rock rising just off the coast: this is the so-called Nave di Serapo (Ship of Serapo). Local legend tells that it is Ulysses’ ship, turned to stone by the wrath of the sorceress Circe — one of those stories that in Gaeta weave into the landscape, much like the town’s name itself, tied to Aeneas’s wet nurse.

When to go

As the main town beach, Serapo is also the busiest: in July and August, during the central hours of the day, it is packed. The best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon, when the light softens and the beach empties out. June and September remain the most enjoyable months, with water still warm and far fewer crowds.

A practical tip: because it faces southwest, winds from that direction can make the sea at Serapo quite rough. If the forecast is uncertain, it is best to check the wind and sea conditions before heading out, or head to a more sheltered cove like Fontania.
