Where to eat in medieval Gaeta, the old town? On Piazza Traniello you have Bar Bazzanti and Lia’s Café for breakfast and an aperitivo, and Kè Eat for lunch and dinner, with Neapolitan pizza and seafood; on Via Bausan, Carlo Avallone’s Pizzeria del Porto makes tiella, pizza by the slice and fried snacks; by the sea, on the Molo Sant’Antonio, Antica Pizzeria Ciro 1923 serves Neapolitan pizza and seafood every day, for lunch and dinner. Three of the five are on the same square, so you can pick by time of day.
Gaeta Medievale, also called Gaeta Vecchia or Sant’Erasmo, is the medieval quarter below the Angioino-Aragonese Castle.

Breakfast on Piazza Traniello
Bar Bazzanti opens at 6:00, Tuesday to Sunday. Its listing mentions coffee and cappuccino, brioche, fried ciambelle, sfogliatelle (the shell-shaped Neapolitan pastry) and homemade tarts, with tables outside.
Lia’s Café, a family-run bar, opens at 7:00 every day. The counter has handmade cornetti, plain, vegan and gluten-free, sweet and savoury cakes, and cappuccino with soy, oat, almond or coconut drink if you prefer. The bar also lists lactose-free options.
On Mondays Bar Bazzanti is closed, so Lia’s Café is the breakfast option in the old town. Other areas are covered in our breakfast guide (in Italian).
Lunch in the old town
Kè Eat serves lunch from Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 16:00. On Sunday only the kitchen is open: no pizza that day, and no Sunday dinner. From the online menu: classic pizzas €7–12, signature pizzas €12–14, fried pizzas €12, calzoni €10–12. Neapolitan fried starters cost €3.50–9.
For something quick, there is Pizzeria del Porto. Its website lists pizza by the slice and rosticceria, the Italian word for hot snacks such as arancini with ragù, potato croquettes and calzoni. You eat at a counter with stools, inside or outside, which the website describes as facing the gulf, or take it away. For lunch, the website hours (from 9:00) apply: call to confirm.
With the sea in front of you, on the Molo Sant’Antonio, Antica Pizzeria Ciro 1923 opens every day from 12:30 to 15:30: Neapolitan pizza and seafood, with a dining room facing the gulf and tables on the seafront.
Tiella in the old town
Tiella is Gaeta’s own dish: a filling closed between two thin layers of dough, usually eaten warm, often by the slice. In the old town, the tiella maker in our network is Pizzeria del Porto, Via Bausan 40. Its website lists octopus tiella, plus anchovies from the gulf, mussels and courgettes, anchovies and salt cod, and vegetables; the most requested, it says, are spinach with Gaeta olives, chard, and sausage with broccoli rabe. Our listing notes that Carlo Avallone has backed tiella as a local dish since the 1990s.

Lia’s Café serves tiella with the aperitivo, made to a family recipe. Kè Eat does not have tiella on its online menu. Fillings change from day to day, so ask what is ready. More on the dish in our tiella guide.
Aperitivo on the square
The aperitivo is the early-evening drink with something to eat. Bar Bazzanti serves it with sandwiches and pizzette and closes at 21:00. Lia’s Café stays open until midnight: its listing mentions classic cocktails such as Negroni, Margarita and Martini, wines and sparkling wines, boards of cured meats and cheeses, and tiella. The Angioino-Aragonese Castle overlooks the quarter, and the square is a handy stop before or after the visit.
Dinner in medieval Gaeta
For a sit-down dinner there is Kè Eat, Tuesday to Saturday from 19:00 to midnight. Besides pizza, the online kitchen menu lists:
- raw seafood €20–26, oysters €6–8 each;
- seafood starters €10–24;
- pasta €16–28, from seafood to Neapolitan classics and fresh pasta;
- fish mains €18–40, catch of the day €7 per 100 g;
- meat by weight €7–33 per 100 g; side dishes €6.
You can book from the listing, by phone on +39 0771 278858 or on WhatsApp; our listing suggests booking ahead. Kè Eat’s website also mentions takeaway and a paid car park about 20 metres away.
Every day, Monday included, Antica Pizzeria Ciro 1923 is also open for dinner, from 19:00 to midnight. From the menu on its website: Neapolitan pizzas up to €16 for the house creations, seafood pasta €20–28, seafood mains €20–25; the menu lists a €2 service charge. In summer it is worth booking by phone.
According to its website, Pizzeria del Porto stays open until 23:00, closed on Monday afternoon. Hours may change in the low season: call +39 0771 461761 or send a WhatsApp to +39 338 433 2175 before you go.
A day in the old town, with stops
One way to do it: breakfast on Piazza Traniello, then the Castle. The Cathedral of St. Erasmus lies between Piazza Traniello and Via Bausan, so after your visit you can carry on to Pizzeria del Porto for tiella. In the afternoon, the Golden Chapel at the Annunziata and the small church of San Giovanni a Mare; then back to the square for the aperitivo and dinner at Kè Eat or, by the sea, at Ciro 1923.
Check the monument opening hours the day before. The walking route is in our old town guide (in Italian).
Parking, the ZTL and the bus
The old town is a ZTL, a limited traffic zone: driving in while it is active without a permit means an automatic fine, and the gates do not all follow the same calendar. Read our Gaeta Medievale ZTL guide before you drive in.
Our parking guide lists two blue-line (paid) areas on Lungomare Caboto: Piazzale 5 Febbraio, also called Parcheggio Gaeta Medievale, and Piazzale Traniello with the former tennis courts, which is almost always full at weekends. Without a car, see how to get to Gaeta for the Cotral bus from Formia-Gaeta station; Lia’s Café says it is close to the Cotral bus terminus.
The places in this guide are part of the Scopri Gaeta network: we check the information with them and on their official pages. For other areas, see where to eat in Gaeta; to stay the night, see where to stay.
