Fontania Beach

The beach of Fontania is a small sandy bay tucked between the rocks, just a stone’s throw from Serapo, where you can swim right above the remains of a Roman villa. It is one of the most beautiful in Gaeta and also one of the smallest: knowing when to go matters just as much as knowing how to get there.

Why it’s different from the others: the underwater Roman villa

Fontania is not just a pretty cove. Beneath the surface lie the remains of the private harbour of the villa of Gnaeus Fonteius, a Roman consul who had his seaside residence here. You swim literally above the submerged pillars and beside the niches carved into the rock, which are still perfectly recognizable.

The water is crystal clear and shallow enough to see everything with just a mask, without scuba gear and without needing to be an expert. That is why those who have visited once keep coming back: it is one of the very few beaches where a swim doubles as a mini archaeological visit.

How to get to Fontania

The beach is reached from Via dei Gerani, on the side facing the gulf between Serapo and Sant’Agostino. Access is via a downhill walk between the houses: it is not as demanding as the three hundred steps of Arenauta, but you should factor it in — especially on the way back up, with a parasol over your shoulder under the midday sun.

By car: spaces are few and on-street, within blue lines, in the Via Fontania car park (2 € per hour). In July and August it fills up quickly: either arrive in the morning, or it is best to park further away and walk a bit. To avoid fines, remember that in Gaeta there are limited traffic zones (ZTL) with electronic access gates.

When to go (the tip that makes all the difference)

Fontania is small. On an August day around noon, the beach is packed and the experience is quite different. The best times are three: early morning, when the water is calm and the seabed is easiest to see; late afternoon, when the beach empties out; and weekdays in June or September, which is when this bay is at its absolute best.

A practical detail rarely mentioned: being nestled between the rocks, Fontania is sheltered when the wind blows from land, but with rough seas from the southwest, waves roll straight into the bay. If the weather looks uncertain, check the wind and sea conditions before heading out.

Is Fontania a free public beach?
