Gaeta is not only sea. It is a city to be savored slowly, among medieval alleys, rock-hung shrines and ancient culinary traditions. One day is not enough, but in a weekend you can catch the true soul of this pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

If you have 48 hours (or a classic weekend), this is the optimized itinerary to see it all without rushing, combining history, breathtaking views and great food.

💡 Advice Before You Leave: Not sure where to park or if the ZTL is active? Don’t waste time looking for signs. Ask Enea, our virtual assistant (the icon on the bottom right) right away: he will tell you in real time where to leave your car and the best restaurants stop by stop.

📅 Day 1: The Rock Giants and the Middle Ages.

We dedicate the first day to the undisputed symbols of Gaeta: the wilderness of Monte Orlando and the charm of the medieval quarter.

Morning: The Sanctuary and Montagna Spaccata

Start the day by climbing Mount Orlando. Here nature meets faith in a unique setting.

  • Montagna Spaccata: Visit the Shrine of the Holy Trinity and walk through the cleft in the rock. Legend has it that it opened at the death of Christ. Don’t forget to descend to the Chapel of the Crucifix.
  • Grotta del Turco: Next to the Sanctuary, look out onto the terrace of Grotta del Turco. The famous steps are not all passable for safety reasons, but the view of the turquoise water and the “Turk’s Hand” is priceless.
  • Mausoleum of Plancus: If you have good legs, climb to the top to admire the Mausoleum of Lucius Munazio Plancus and enjoy a 360-degree view of the Gulf.

Lunch: The Tiella break

You cannot say you have been to Gaeta without eating Tiella (the savory pie stuffed with octopus and olives or escarole). Stop at one of the historic “tiellerie”. Ask Enea, “Where do I eat the best tiella near Monte Orlando?”

Afternoon: Medieval Gaeta

Descend to the tip of the city. Medieval Gaeta is a labyrinth of history.

  • Temple of San Francesco: The neo-Gothic colossus that dominates the skyline. The steps and statue of Religion offer one of the most beautiful sunsets in Italy. Learn more here.
  • The Cathedral and Bell Tower: Admire the famous Arab-Norman Bell Tower and enter the Cathedral to visit the wonderful Crypt of St. Erasmus (Succorpo), a riot of Baroque marble.
  • Angioino-Aragonese Castle: Watch it from below or check for special openings. Its mass dominates the entire neighborhood. Learn more here.

📅 Day 2: The Village, Art and the Sea

The second day is devoted to the city’s seafaring soul and its hidden art treasures.

Morning: Walk in Serapo and Fontania

Breathe in the iodine on Serapo Beach. Even in winter, a walk on the golden sand regenerates the spirit.

  • Get as far south as the southern end to discover the small beach of Fontania and the remains of the Roman Villa of Gnaeus Fonteo, where the Romans had their private pools by the sea.

Lunch: Fresh fish in the Borgo

Move to the Borgo (Via Indipendenza). This is where the fishermen live and this is where you must eat. Spaghetti with clams, fried paranza or octopus alla luciana. Ask Enea, “Recommend a seafood restaurant in the Borgo.”

Afternoon: Sacred Art and Alleys

Get lost in the “alleys” of Via Indipendenza, where ladies still sell fruit outside the house.

  • Santissima Annunziata and Cappella d’Oro: This is a must-see. The Annunziata complex hides the Golden Chapel, a Renaissance room with a coffered ceiling of pure gold. A breathtaking jewel.
  • Salita degli Scalzi: Conclude by visiting the Church of Mary Most Holy of Porto Salvo, the beating heart of the sailors’ festival.

Need help organizing?

Gaeta is beautiful, but finding parking or choosing the right restaurant can be difficult. Don’t stress: Enea is here for that. Open the chat at the bottom right and ask anything:

  • “Where do I park to go to Medieval Gaeta?”
  • “Find me a B&B for tonight.”
  • “What will the weather be tomorrow?”

Have a great weekend in Gaeta!
