La Tana di Cagliostro: Gaeta’s Votapiatto

La Tana di Cagliostro is in a narrow lane near Via Indipendenza and opens for dinner only, closed on Mondays. Its signature is the Votapiatto, a typical Gaeta dish of fried fish: baby squid (calamarelle) at €30, small squid (totanetti) at €20, red mullet, anchovies or argentini at €16. Seafood pasta includes spaghetti with lupini clams (€14), casarecce with octopus and Gaeta olives (€16) and the house linguine with mussels, clams and prawns (€18). Book by phone or WhatsApp.

Kè Eat: raw fish, oysters and dry-aged fish

Kè Eat, on Piazza Generale Traniello in the old town, is also a pizzeria, but its kitchen menu has a long seafood section. Raw dishes run from €20 (carpaccio of the catch of the day) to €26 (a platter of raw shellfish with red prawns from Mazara del Vallo). Gillardeau, Regal Or and Tarbouriech oysters cost €6 to €8 each, or €36 for a tasting plate of six. Among the pasta dishes, «Malafemmina» is spaghetti with clams (€24). The «frollatura» dishes are fish aged in-house, such as amberjack burger and sausage (€16 and €18). The catch of the day is €7 per 100 g. Closed on Mondays; on Sundays only lunch is served.

Antica Pizzeria Ciro 1923: seafood and pizza on the seafront

Ciro 1923 is on the Lungomare Caboto, in medieval Gaeta, and opens every day for lunch and dinner. Next to the Neapolitan pizza there are seafood starters, pasta and mains: peppered mussels €14, red prawn carpaccio €25, spaghetti with clams €20, lobster linguine €28, grilled amberjack €25, fresh fish at €7 per 100 g. The menu lists a €2 service charge.

Eating by the sea on the Via Flacca: Il Ninfeo and Aeneas’ Landing

For a seafood restaurant right on the water, head out of town on the Via Flacca, the coast road towards Sperlonga. At Grand Hotel Il Ninfeo, in the small bay of San Vito, the 160-seat dining room looks onto the beach. The menu includes amberjack sashimi (€25), linguine with lobster (€35, minimum two people), red mullet in tomato water with Gaeta olive powder (€30) and fried small fish (€20). The cover charge is €3 per person.

A little further along, Aeneas’ Landing Resort has an indoor dining room and a panoramic rock terrace above the sea. The resort’s website describes a buffet of dishes made with the day’s catch; prices and format are not online, so ask when you book.

Summer only: Ariana Beach Garden and Lido Selene

Ariana Beach Garden, on Ariana beach, and Lido Selene, on Serapo beach, are open from May to September. Out of season both are closed. At Ariana you will find paccheri with mixed seafood and a seafood grill at €23; at Selene spaghettoni with clams and mullet bottarga at €20, linguine with red prawns at €28 and the catch of the day at €8 per 100 g, plus pizza. To pick a beach, see our guide to beaches and beach clubs in Gaeta.

Raw fish and octopus tiella

For raw fish and oysters, Kè Eat has the dedicated menu sections; Ciro 1923 has tuna tartare (€20) and red prawn carpaccio (€25), Il Ninfeo amberjack sashimi. Tiella is Gaeta’s own savoury pie. The octopus version is served as a starter: at La Tana di Cagliostro it is made with octopus, olives and tomato and costs €4 a piece; at Ciro 1923 it is €7 a slice. Our tiella guide covers its history and where else to buy it.

Before you go

On the menus of Ciro 1923 and Il Ninfeo some dishes are marked as frozen or stored at –18 °C: if you want fresh fish, ask for the catch of the day. For fish sold by weight, ask how much it weighs before it is cooked. If you come by car, read our guide to parking and the ZTL; Kè Eat mentions a paid car park about 20 metres away. Il Ninfeo and Aeneas’ Landing are also hotels, listed in our guide on where to stay in Gaeta. To eat with the sea in front of you, see the guide to seafront restaurants in Gaeta; for other kinds of food, see where to eat in Gaeta.
