Sant’Agostino Beach

The spiaggia di Sant’Agostino — which everyone in Gaeta calls Piana di Sant’Agostino — is the largest in the municipality: two kilometers of golden sand along via Flacca, about 8 km from the town center. It is the exact opposite of Serapo: you come here by car, there is plenty of space even on Ferragosto, and the wind makes it the go-to spot for water sports enthusiasts.

Why it is called Piana di Sant’Agostino

If you search for information on this beach, you will find both names: spiaggia di Sant’Agostino and Piana di Sant’Agostino. They are the same thing. “Piana” is the name of the area — the flat stretch of coast that opens up between the cliff and the sea, just past the Flacca viaduct — and it is how the locals in Gaeta refer to it. On maps and road signs, you will most often come across this second form.

How to get there and where to park

You arrive via via Flacca, the state road connecting Gaeta to Sperlonga: the beach runs alongside the road for its entire length, and access points to the shore are distributed along the stretch. It cannot be reached on foot from the town center: plan your journey by car or check the public transport services operating on your date.

The area has municipal blue-line spaces and privately operated parking, with different rules. Consult the municipal tariff for blue-line parking. For a beach club, check whether parking is included or charged separately, along with opening times and access arrangements.

Where to find the free beach

Here, the free beach is by no means an afterthought: the free sections are wide and alternate with serviced beach clubs along the entire two kilometers. This is the main reason why many choose Sant’Agostino over the city beaches — there is genuine room to breathe even on peak days, something you will not find at Serapo in August.

As always, visitors on the free beach should bring everything they need: there are no showers or restrooms outside of the private lidos, and the sun beats down strong as the shoreline is fully open.

The wind, sports, and the cliff

Sant’Agostino is exposed, which is both its drawback and its greatest asset. When the wind blows from the southwest, the sea gets choppy and waves break on the shore: a less ideal day for those seeking calm, flat water, but a perfect day for board riders. That is why it is the favorite beach for surfers in Gaeta.

Behind the shore rises the rock face of Monte Moneta, featuring bolted climbing routes: you can rock climb above the beach and swim below, a combination you will not find anywhere else in Gaeta. Before heading out, it is well worth checking the wind and sea conditions: here more than elsewhere, they truly shape the day.

When to go

Being so long, Sant’Agostino handles the peak season better than any other beach: even on Ferragosto you can find a spot, simply by walking a bit along the sand away from the main access paths. June and September remain the best months — warm water, more consistent winds, and roads towards Sperlonga free of traffic jams.
