Montagna Spaccata is one of Gaeta’s most iconic sites, a place that combines nature, history and tradition. How much does admission cost? The sanctuary requests a voluntary donation to help cover maintenance costs.
Where is it? Via Santissima Trinità 3, Gaeta, on Monte Orlando. From Lungomare Caboto, follow Via Firenze and Via Munazio Planco. The nearby parking area has limited capacity.
How far can I descend into Grotta del Turco? Follow the latest sanctuary notice and the access limits displayed on site. A previous maintenance notice or the total number of steps does not confirm how far the route is open today.

The Tradition of Montagna Spaccata
Tradition has it that the mountain split at the exact moment of Christ’s crucifixion, as a sign of divine power. This caused Montagna Spaccata to become a place of deep religious significance, the destination of pilgrimages and visits by rulers, pontiffs and saints over the centuries. Among the most distinguished visitors was St. Philip Neri, who took refuge in prayer between the cracks in the rock, and his bed is still visible today, known as “The Bed of St. Philip Neri.”
