October is the month when Gaeta belongs to its locals once again — and that is precisely why it is one of the best times to visit. The beaches empty out, booking a table at restaurants is effortless, and the calendar keeps going: the first two weeks bring an Italian sailing championship, a running race through the stairways of the historic village, and the medieval quarter’s most heartfelt festival.
Events in October 2026
1-4 October · Campionato Italiano delle Zone FIV
The Gulf brings together teams from the fifteen Zonal Committees of the Federazione Italiana Vela (Italian Sailing Federation): not clubs against clubs, but regions against regions, featuring mixed under-25 crews on Match 25 boats. Lazio arrives as the defending champion, protecting the title on home waters.
You can watch from Lungomare Caboto, where the boats dock, and admission is free. Dates, schedule, and map on the event page.
11 October · Gaeta Urban Trail
A twelve-and-a-half-kilometre run through the city: stairways, mule tracks, the alleys of the medieval quarter, and the slopes of Monte Orlando. It is the third edition, starting from Via Annunziata, and it is the most demanding and beautiful way to see Gaeta in a single morning. Route, schedule, and registration.
Between late September and 7 October · Festa della Madonna del Rosario
This is the festival of the medieval quarter, the one the residents of Gaeta Vecchia look forward to all year: the Confraternita del Rosario holds its celebrations between late September and 7 October, the liturgical feast day of the Madonna del Rosario. Alongside the religious observances, there is usually an evening gathering in the piazza, with live music and food and wine stands.
The 2026 schedule has not yet been released. As soon as the dates are announced, you will find them here and on the event page: we will not give you dates that haven’t been confirmed.
If you arrive in the last days of September
Those travelling for a long weekend will find the last weekend of September packed with events:
- 24-27 September — Campionato Italiano Match Race: one-on-one duels in the Gulf, with three titles up for grabs.
- 25-27 September — Le Strade del Gusto e dell’Inclusione, third stop in Via Buonomo.
- 26-27 September — SU:Ggestiva, music across the historic centre.
We covered both regattas together in this article: they are the reason why October in Gaeta begins on the water.
The sea in October: can you still swim?
During the first half of the month, you often can: the sea retains the heat accumulated over the summer and cools down much more slowly than the air. In the second half it becomes a gamble, depending on sea conditions and wind rather than the calendar.
Two things to keep in mind, however, and they are not minor details:
- Beach clubs close. In October the beaches return to public access but without services: no sun loungers, no bars, and often no showers. Serapo and Sant’Agostino remain stunning and become deserted, but make sure to come prepared.
- Coves should be assessed on the spot. With rough seas, reaching certain coves is not a good idea. Look at the conditions on the day, not the month on the calendar.
What to visit, and how to avoid finding closed doors
October is the month when opening hours change: with the peak season over, churches, museums, and monuments shorten their visiting hours, and quite a few switch to weekends only. It is the time of year when you are most likely to encounter a closed door after walking uphill.
This is why we don’t list specific opening hours here: they would reflect September times and quickly become outdated within a week. We keep them updated in a single place, on each location’s dedicated guide — the Castello Angioino-Aragonese, the Santissima Annunziata with the Cappella d’Oro, the Santuario della Montagna Spaccata, and the museums — so what you read is valid on the day of your visit.
One fixture that remains unchanged in October is the weekly Wednesday morning market: it is the most authentic way to experience local life outside the tourist season.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth visiting Gaeta in October?
If you are looking for fully serviced beach clubs and nightlife, no: that season is over. If you want to explore the historic centre without queues, find available tables at restaurants, enjoy walks on Monte Orlando in 20-degree weather, and take advantage of three events in the first two weeks alone, October is one of the best months of the year.
When is the Festa della Madonna del Rosario 2026 held?
The official dates have not yet been announced. The Confraternita del Rosario traditionally holds celebrations between late September and 7 October, the liturgical feast day of the Madonna del Rosario. As soon as the schedule is released, we will publish it here.
Can you still go swimming?
In the first half of the month, often yes, as the sea stays warmer than the air. However, beach clubs close: the beaches are open to the public and without facilities.
Do you have to pay for October events?
The Campionato Italiano delle Zone FIV can be watched for free from Lungomare Caboto. The Gaeta Urban Trail requires an entry fee for runners, but watching the race costs nothing.
