October is the month when Gaeta belongs to its locals once again — and that is precisely why it is one of the best times to visit. The beaches empty out, booking a table at a restaurant is hassle-free, and the calendar does not slow down: the first two weeks bring an Italian sailing championship, an urban running race along the village stairways, and the medieval quarter’s most cherished festival.

Events in October 2026
1-4 October · Campionato Italiano delle Zone FIV
The Gulf brings together the teams of the fifteen Comitati di Zona of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV): not club against club, but region against region, featuring mixed under-25 crews on Match 25 boats. Lazio arrives as the defending champion, defending the title on home waters.

4 October · Festa della Madonna del Rosario in Piazza Castello
Sunday 4 October from 19:30, Piazza Castello in the medieval quarter celebrates the Madonna del Rosario: live music with Max Guadalaxara and Franco Tispi, food stalls run by eleven local venues in Gaeta, and the draw for the charity raffle supporting cancer research. 10-11 October · Giornate FAI d’Autunno
For the Giornate FAI, doors open at the Castello Angioino, including the former military prison and panoramic terraces over the gulf, and the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista alla Porta: Saturday and Sunday 10-13 and 15-18, with admission by donation and no advance booking needed. 11 October · Gaeta Urban Trail
Twelve and a half kilometers of running across the city: stairways, mule paths, medieval alleyways, and the slopes of Monte Orlando. Now in its third edition, the race starts from Via Annunziata and is both the most demanding and the most rewarding way to experience Gaeta in a single morning. Route, schedule, and registration.
14-16 October · Sport, Storie Gaeta with Elisa Di Francisca and Olympic Champions
Three days dedicated to sports storytelling: this is the second edition of the Festival della Narrazione. Mornings at the Teatro Ariston feature talks with champions such as Manuel Bortuzzo and Alessia Filippi (Thursday 15), Roberto Cammarelle and Vito Dell’Aquila (Friday 16); every afternoon from 16:00 to 21:00, the Villaggio dello Sport in Piazza XIX Maggio hosts eleven athletic disciplines and the Festival della Scherma (fencing festival): Elisa Di Francisca on the 14th, Matteo Tagliariol on the 15th, and Luca Curatoli on the 16th, starting from 17:00. 17-18 October · Regata Interzonale Finn and “La città giusta”
Out in the gulf, competitors race in the Interzonale Finn, a Finn-class regatta organized by Yacht Club Gaeta: the first warning signal sounds on Saturday 17 at 12:00, and the promenade offers the best view of the sails. On Saturday morning at 10:00 at Palazzo De Vio, admission is free for the presentation of «La città giusta», the writings of Don Luigi Di Liegro.
20 October · Franco Marrocco and the Exhibition “L’eco del bosco”
The director of the Accademia di Brera receives the “Una vita per l’arte” award at 10:30 at City Hall, followed at 17:00 by the opening of the drawing exhibition «L’eco del bosco» at Pinacoteca «Antonio Sapone».
23-25 October · Pizza Fest, Cugini di Campagna, and Biagio Izzo
A “slice of history” returns: the second edition of the Pizza Fest brings cooking demos, live music, food & beer, and, for the first time, gluten-free pizza along Corso Italia and into the new Piazza dei Maestri Vetrai. On Friday evening 23, Piazza dei Maestri Vetrai hosts the free concert by Cugini di Campagna, followed on Sunday 25 by Biagio Izzo with his one-man show; exact set times have not yet been released. Arriving in the Final Days of September
Travelers heading here for an extended weekend will find the last weekend of September packed with events:
- 24-27 September — Campionato Italiano Match Race: head-to-head duels in the Gulf, with three national titles up for grabs.
- 25-27 September — Le Strade del Gusto e dell’Inclusione, the third stop along Viale Battaglione degli Alpini.
- 26-27 September — SU:Ggestiva, live concerts at Montagna Spaccata, Grotta del Turco, and inside Cappella d’Oro.

The Sea in October: Can You Still Go for a Swim?
During the first half of the month, you very often can: the sea retains the warmth built up over the summer and cools down much more slowly than the air. In the second half, it becomes more of a gamble, depending on sea conditions and wind rather than the calendar.
There are two things worth keeping in mind, however, and neither is an afterthought:
- Beach clubs close. In October, the beaches become public again but without facilities: no sun loungers, no bars, often no showers. Serapo and Sant’Agostino remain gorgeous and turn deserted, but come prepared.
- Assess the coves on site. When the sea is rough, accessing certain inlets is not a good idea. Check the conditions on the day, not the month.
What to visit, and how to avoid finding places closed
October is the month when opening hours change: once the peak season ends, churches, museums, and monuments shorten their opening times, and more than a few switch to weekends only. It is the time of year when you are most likely to find a closed door after walking all the way uphill.
That is why we do not list opening hours here: they would be September’s, and would be out of date within a week. We keep them updated in just one place, the individual pages for each site — the Castello Angioino-Aragonese, the Santissima Annunziata with the Cappella d’Oro, the Santuario della Montagna Spaccata, and the museums — so what you read is accurate on the day you visit.
One regular fixture that does not change in October is the weekly Wednesday morning market: it is the most direct way to get a feel for everyday local life outside the holiday season.
After October: the illuminations
The month ends with Halloween and the All Saints’ Day weekend: this year the 31st falls on a Saturday. Once October draws to a close, Gaeta looks forward to the illuminations of Favole di Luce 2026-2027 (the 2025-2026 edition was switched on on 9 November). This year’s dates and program are not yet official: you will find them on that page as soon as they are announced, along with parking details, shuttle buses, and the map of the installations.

Is it worth visiting Gaeta in October?
If you are looking for serviced beaches and nightlife, no: that season is over. If you are looking to explore the historic town without queues, find restaurants that readily have a table, enjoy walks on Monte Orlando in 20-degree weather, and take advantage of a calendar that still features three events in the first two weeks, October is one of the best months of the year.
When is the Festa della Madonna del Rosario 2026 held?
Sunday 4 October 2026 from 19:30, in Piazza Castello in Gaeta Medievale, with a free shuttle from Piazza Traniello starting at 16:00. During the evening, the charity raffle prizes will be drawn, with proceeds going to the Associazione Italiana Ricerca contro il Cancro (Italian Cancer Research Association).
Can you still go swimming?
In the first half of the month, often yes, because the sea remains warmer than the air. Beach clubs, however, close: the beaches are free to access and without facilities.
Do you have to pay for the October events?
The Campionato Italiano delle Zone FIV can be watched for free from Lungomare Caboto. The Gaeta Urban Trail is a race requiring registration for runners, but watching the race costs nothing. The Festa del Rosario takes place in the town square and is open to everyone.
