There is a place in Gaeta where, looking up, all that glitters truly is gold. It is the Cappella dell’Immacolata, better known as the Cappella d’Oro: a treasure trove of art and faith that changed the history of the Church. Here is everything you need to know to visit it, from the story of the exiled Pope to the new weekend opening hours.
If the Santuario della Santissima Annunziata is the beating heart of Gaeta, the Cappella d’Oro is its most precious soul.
As soon as you cross the threshold of this space adjoining the sanctuary, your breath catches for a moment. It is not just a church; it is a jewel set in time.
A Ceiling of Pure Gold ✨
The name is no coincidence. The feature that makes this chapel unique is its wooden barrel vault, a coffered structure with octagonal geometric patterns.
Every frame, every carved detail is entirely coated in pure gold. This cascade of light frames an extraordinary pictorial cycle: 19 panels created around 1531 by Gian Filippo Criscuolo, which depict the life of Jesus and seem to float within the gold.
On the altar, instead, the gentle gaze of the Virgin Mary awaits you, painted by Scipione Pulzone (known as “il Gaetano”) in 1582, a masterpiece of Counter-Reformation painting that touches the heart with its humanity.
Where History Became Dogma 📜
Visiting the Cappella d’Oro means physically stepping into a page of world history.
Between 1848 and 1849, Gaeta became the “Second Rome.” Pope Pius IX took refuge here, fleeing the revolutionary uprisings.
The Pontiff loved to retreat in prayer right in this golden chapel. It is said that, kneeling for hours before Pulzone’s painting of the Virgin, he found the inspiration to write the encyclical ‘Ubi Primum’.
It was that document that laid the foundations for the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception: the truth of faith that Mary was born without original sin. An event celebrated worldwide today, but which had its spark right here, within these gilded walls.

To admire this masterpiece, it is essential to know the opening days.
Starting in September, the Chapel is open six days a week, and on weekends closing time extends to 22:00 — the best time to see it, when the gold of the vault catches the artificial light:
