A new challenge on the horizon for our city. After the virtuous path taken in the past few years, Gaeta is taking the field to win the prestigious award established by the Ministry for Sea Policy. Here’s what to know and the next steps.

Gaeta does not simply overlook the sea: Gaeta is sea. It is in our history as a Maritime Republic, it is in the DNA of our economy, it is the color that paints our days. And it is precisely to celebrate and enhance this indissoluble identity that the Municipal Administration has decided to launch a great new challenge: Gaeta is officially applying to be the Italian Capital of the Sea for the year 2026.

This candidacy is not just an honorary title, but a strategic opportunity to attract investment, national visibility and a 1 million euro prize to invest in the territory.

What is the title “Italian Capital of the Sea”?

Unlike the “Capital of Culture,” this award is specifically dedicated to coastal municipalities that know how to distinguish themselves in the promotion of maritime, Blue Economy and environmental sustainability. It is a call for proposals managed by the Department for Sea Policies at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, designed to reward those who, like Gaeta, see the sea not only as a tourist resource, but as an engine of cultural and social development.

Why can Gaeta win?

Our city has all the right cards to compete at high levels. The candidacy is part of a path of continuity with the “Blue” vision that Gaeta has been pursuing for years. The strengths we will focus on are clear:

  • History and Tradition: A thousand-year maritime heritage unique to Latium.
  • Sea Economy: A living entrepreneurial fabric, from fishing to shipbuilding to nautical tourism.
  • Sustainability: Projects aimed at marine biodiversity protection and green innovation.

Next steps: appointment to January 9

The race has just begun and the time frame is tight. The application must be finalized by Jan. 20, 2026, the deadline for the call for applications.

To involve all citizens, associations and entrepreneurs in this adventure, the City Council has already set a crucial date: a public meeting will be held on January 9 at City Hall to explain the project guidelines and gather ideas. It will be a time for teamwork, because as always, Gaeta wins when it is united.

Let’s get ready to support our city: 2026 could be the year Gaeta officially becomes the Queen of the Seas of Italy.

Go Gaeta! 💙⚓
