The attraction

What makes it special

Originally established as an impregnable stronghold against Saracen raids, the Sant’Erasmo district is the captivating medieval core of Gaeta. In addition to holding an invaluable treasure of military and religious architecture (dominated by the renowned Castello Angioino-Aragonese), it hides fascinating curiosities: the altar frontal of the Cathedral, for instance, is actually an ancient Roman sarcophagus repurposed in the fifteenth century. On the edge of the neighborhood, nestled in the Parco di Monte Orlando, stands the mystical Santuario della Montagna Spaccata: legend has it that San Filippo Neri lived here in prayer, sleeping on a bed of bare rock overlooking the sea, still venerated by the faithful as a natural relic.
