What makes it special

The Church of the Santissima Vergine Addolorata (also known simply as the Addolorata) is a striking house of worship located in the heart of Gaeta Vecchia. The present church, although of older origins, has a predominantly Baroque appearance that is the result of renovations that took place between the 17th and 18th centuries. It is located a short distance from the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, forming with it an important pole of historical spirituality in the city.

The interior, with a single nave, is an example of sobriety and elegance, featuring stucco decorations and a high altar that holds the venerated image of Our Lady of Sorrows. The facade is simple, harmoniously integrated into the medieval urban fabric, and is preceded by a small area that facilitates access from the narrow San Giovanni Bosco Street.

Curiosities and events:

  • Devotion: The cult of Our Lady of Sorrows is deeply rooted in Gaetano tradition. The church is the focal point for celebrations related to the Passion and sorrow of the Virgin, moments particularly felt by the local population during Holy Week.
  • Confraternity headquarters: Historically, the church has been linked to the activities of lay congregations that were involved in charity work and the decorum of religious celebrations, keeping alive the devotional heritage of the neighborhood.
  • “Hidden” architecture: Although not as imposing as the Cathedral, this church is popular with visitors because of the intimate, cozy atmosphere inside, typical of small parishes in historic seaside towns.
  • Link to the area: The church is located in a strategic area for those visiting the historic center, situated right along the path leading to the high fortifications and the Castle, making it a silent and spiritual stop for many tourists.
