Today I am taking you into the Cappella d'Oro, the Golden Chapel. For nine months Gaeta was the second Rome: Pope Pius IX took refuge here. It is said he meditated for hours in front of this painting, and that here he found the inspiration for the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Now look at the ceiling: carved wood, all covered in pure gold.
