The Montagna Spaccata (Split Mountain) is the most extraordinary place in Gaeta: a cleft that cuts Monte Orlando from the summit down to the sea, which tradition says opened at the death of Christ.
In this video the drone goes down between the two rock walls to the Chapel of the Crucifix, built on a boulder wedged halfway down the cleft. On the edge stands the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity, founded in the 9th century on the remains of a Roman villa. At the bottom lies the turquoise water of the Grotta del Turco, reached by a stone staircase.
Opening hours, tickets and directions are on the Montagna Spaccata page.
