The spiaggia delle Scissure is a light-sand cove nestled below via Flacca, in the wild stretch of coastline between the Ariana and the Arenauta. Its name comes from the scissure: the deep fissures that cut through the cliff behind the beach and, when viewed from above, seem to split the rock all the way into the Mediterranean scrub.

Where it is and how to get there

Le Scissure is located along the stretch of via Flacca between the Ariana and the Arenauta, on the coast leading from Gaeta towards Sperlonga. As with this entire section of the coastline, do not expect convenient amenities: you walk down from the road, and there are no dedicated public parking areas or blue-striped parking spaces. Those who arrive early will find a spot and peace; those who arrive at midday in August, much less so.

The fissures and the Tower

The landscape here has two signature features. The first is the fissures in the cliff that give the beach its name: deep clefts in the rock rising from the shore right into the vegetation. The second is the Torre di Scissure, the stone coastal watchtower dominating the promontory overlooking the open sea: part of the defensive tower system that once guarded this coast.

The sea: swimming and snorkeling

The water is shallow and crystal-clear for several meters, with a sandy seabed in the center of the bay and a few protruding rocks at the edges: perfect for a relaxed swim, while the rocks on either side offer the best snorkeling. It is the kind of cove where you stop to admire the water before even stepping in.

What to bring

It is a free public beach with no facilities: no bars, no rentals, no lidos. Bring water, a beach umbrella, and everything you might need — including mask and snorkel — and take all your trash back with you: it is the unwritten rule that keeps this cove just as it is.
