Torre Viola is a coastal watchtower commanding a prominent position over the Gaeta shoreline. It was part of the elaborate defence and signalling network of the Kingdom of Naples, first conceived by the Angevins to create a permanent chain of lookout posts along the entire coast. Its main purpose was to spot the frequent raids by Saracens and corsairs in good time and help to hold them back.
