The attraction

What makes it special

Historically developed outside the ancient walls, Porto Salvo has been animated since the Middle Ages by fishermen, artisans, and master shipwrights. The deep social divide between the workers of the sea and the aristocracy of the promontory led this proud neighborhood to declare itself an independent municipality from 1897 to 1927, taking the name of “Comune di Elena” in honor of the future Queen of Italy. It is the place where the heart of the most authentic folk traditions beats: the famous Tiella di Gaeta was born in the winding alleys of Via dell’Indipendenza. It is also from these narrow streets that, on New Year’s Eve, “Glie Sciuscie” come to life—the picturesque itinerant musicians armed with humble, handcrafted instruments.
