In the heart of Gaeta’s historic center, the Cattedrale di Sant’Erasmo is a symbol of faith and thousand-year-old history. Built in the 11th century, this splendid church was dedicated to Sant’Erasmo, the patron saint of the city. Beyond its great religious value, the cathedral fascinates visitors with its architecture, blending Neoclassical and Neogothic styles.

The Bell Tower: An Imposing Structure
Next to the cathedral stands the magnificent Romanesque bell tower, a 57-meter-high tower begun in the 12th century and completed in 1279. Decorated with Arab-style elements, polychrome enamels, and ceramics, the bell tower is one of Gaeta’s most iconic structures. At its base, you can still admire ancient Roman sarcophagi and bas-reliefs.

A Place of Spirituality and History
Inside the cathedral, lovers of sacred art can admire medieval frescoes, artworks, and the cripta di Sant’Erasmo (crypt), which houses the relics of the saint. The atmosphere inside is solemn and fascinating, a true journey into the city’s history.

If you are visiting Gaeta, the Cattedrale di Sant’Erasmo and its imposing bell tower are must-see stops for anyone wishing to discover the history and beauty of the city.
