Located in the heart of Gaeta’s historic center (Gaeta Medievale) along Via San Giovanni Bosco, the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria is an architectural jewel that testifies to the city’s rich religious and artistic past. Originally founded in the 14th century together with the adjacent monastery of the Benedictine nuns, the present structure dates mainly from a Baroque and neoclassical makeover that took place between the 17th and 18th centuries.
The church is known for its imposing entrance staircase and elegant facade that dominates the surrounding area. Historically, the complex was one of the city’s most important spiritual centers due to the presence of the cloistered monastery. One of the most interesting features is (or was, before the closure) the interior decoration, characterized by fine stucco and marble altars of the Neapolitan school.
Curiosities and events: The church is linked to the figure of St. Catherine of Alexandria, patroness of studies and philosophers. A significant event in its recent history was its permanent closure to worship in 1989 due to structural problems; since then the building has been waiting for a complete restoration that could return it to public use. Despite the impossibility of visiting its interior, the exterior remains one of the most photographed spots in Old Gaeta because of its striking panoramic position.
