The Statue of St. Mary Help of Christians towers over one of Gaeta’s most striking viewpoints, at the eponymous belvedere located along the slope leading to the upper part of the city and the castle. The statue is a symbol of protection and devotion very dear to the townspeople, especially because of its historical connection with the Salesian work present in the area.
Placed on a high plinth, the effigy overlooks the Gulf of Gaeta with a gaze turned toward the sea and the Porto Salvo neighborhood. The belvedere on which it rests is a fixed stop for visitors, as it offers one of the most photographed perspectives of the city, embracing the Caboto waterfront, the domes of medieval churches and the silhouette of SS. Annunziata in a single glance.
Curiosities and events:
- The link with the Salesians: The statue is closely linked to the figure of St. John Bosco and the presence of the Salesian Institute in Gaeta. The devotion to Mary Help of Christians was introduced precisely by the sons of Don Bosco, who for decades trained generations of young Gaetans.
- Prayer and stopping point: It is not uncommon to find worshippers standing in prayer at the foot of the statue or mere passersby stopping to admire the sunset, considered by many to be the most beautiful in the city from this very angle.
- Restorations: Over the years, due to constant exposure to sea winds and saltiness, the statue and its base have undergone several cleaning and maintenance operations to preserve its original whiteness.
- Tradition: During the feast of Mary Help of Christians (May 24), the site becomes a destination for small pilgrimages and moments of recollection, emphasizing the role of the Virgin as the “Help of Christians” and protector of the local community.
