.It is a large rift in the limestone rock that opens in the ground and sinks vertically for about 50 meters to the sea below. This geological formation is the result of millennia of marine and karst erosion that have hollowed out the cliff, creating a natural “chimney” of incredible beauty.
Seen from above, the well appears as a huge eye looking into the sea abyss; from inside the cave (accessible by sea), sunlight filters through the upper opening creating emerald and turquoise reflections on the water. It is considered one of the wildest and most fascinating nature sites on the Latium coast, a must-see destination for lovers of trekking and landscape photography.
Curiosities and events:
- Origin of the name: The eerie name derives from the dark, thunderous sound that the sea makes as it breaks into the cavities of the cave during storm surges, similar to an underground wail or roar that the ancients attributed to infernal presences.
- Access by sea: Although it can be seen from above by walking the paths of Mount Orlando, the fullest experience is by sea (by boat or kayak), entering the cave below to admire the sky through the “well.”
- Geology: The area is rich in similar karst phenomena, but Devil’s Well is unique because of its width and the perfect verticality of the shaft.
- Flora and Fauna: The walls of the pit are home to typical Mediterranean scrub species and are often flown over by the peregrine falcon, which nests among Gaeta’s inaccessible cliffs.
