Gaeta is a city that would deserve a week, but sometimes time is a tyrant. If you only have 24 hours (or an out-of-town trip), the risk is to wander around, get stuck in traffic, or miss the real gems.

That’s why we asked our Artificial Intelligence Enea to design the perfect itinerary: logical, without wasting time and able to show you the soul of the city from sunrise to sunset. Here is the program for an unforgettable day.

🕘 Morning: The Magic of Mount Orlando (Before the Crowd)

The first insider tip is: start from the top. As soon as you arrive in Gaeta, don’t stop in the center but head straight for the Ulysses Riviera Regional Park, at the tip of the promontory.

The first mandatory stop is the Shrine of the Montagna Spaccata. It is an iconic place, where history and legend come together: the three fissures in the rock are said to have opened at the time of Christ’s death.

  • Why go now. Early in the morning you will avoid the crowds of tour buses and enjoy the mystical silence of the place and overlook the picturesque Grotta del Turco in the best light.

🕐 Lunch: “Street Food” at the Gaetana

You have little time, so no three-hour long lunches. It’s time to taste the queen of our table: the Tiella di Gaeta. It is not a simple stuffed pizza, but an institution: two layers of fluffy dough enclosing flavors of sea or land (the classic is octopus and tomato, or escarole and olives).

  • Enea’s advice: It is the perfect “on the fly” meal. You can grab a slice (or a whole one!) at the best delis or, as our IA suggests, stop by the Pizzeria del Porto to play it safe. Authentic taste, zero waiting.

🕒 Afternoon: Dive into the Middle Ages (Strategic)

After lunch, head down to the historic heart: medieval Gaeta. Pay attention to logistics: leave your car or head to Piazzale Caboto. This is the strategic starting point because it is right before the beginning of the medieval ZTL, allowing you to explore everything on foot without stress.

From here, the path is an ascent into beauty:

  1. Behold the Bell Tower and the Cathedral of St. Erasmus (Basilica Cathedral).
  2. Climb up to the majestic Angioino-Aragonese Castle: even just seeing it from outside as it dominates the gulf is worth the effort of the climb.
  3. Get lost in the alleys: don’t follow a precise map, let your instincts guide you through the arches and stairways until you unearth the small Church of San Giovanni a Mare with its Arab dome.

🌅 Sunset: The final postcard

You can’t leave Gaeta without “That” photo. To close the day, head to the Temple of San Francesco. Its location is privileged: a scenic staircase and a terrace overlooking the entire Gulf. Watching the sun go down from here, with the view sweeping all the way to Ischia on a clear day, is the best way to say “Goodbye” to Gaeta.
